HTML is a simple text based language for formatting web pages. It is not a true programming language,
it is just a set of codes that tell the browser how to format your page content, such as: photos, text, links etc.
There are many people building websites who do not understand HTML.
And that's okay, but only if they're indifferent about getting a great search engine ranking.
These people create their websites using website building software. This type of software works great.
You end up with a beautiful website quickly. However, using software to create your website will not allow you to optimize the site for SEO.
If you use website creation software, you will spend many hours learning how to use that particular
software package and still not know how a website works. In the end, you will have a website, but if anything goes wrong,
doesn't work right, look just right or you wish to add something that the software doesn't allow, you will have
no idea how to do it. If you know HTML code, you can fix it in seconds by opening the page in a text editor,
locating the problem and fixing it yourself.
You would be better off spending the time learning how to use HTML, then learning a specific software package that creates the
HTML for you.
Once you know how to create a website using only a text editor, then it would be okay to use one of these
website building software packages because you understand exactly what it is doing.
The other problem with website creation programs is they tend to add a lot of unnecessary code and Java script
into the HTML pages. Unnecessary code will slow or block the web crawlers from properly indexing your
site and cause you to get a lower search engine ranking.
We want to make it easy for the web crawlers to index your site.
Putting up roadblocks for web crawlers is like closing the exit ramp from the
interstate that leads to your place of business. If people can't get to you, or even find you,
there is no point in having a website.
If you understand how HTML works, you can do many things:
- Build your own website with just a text editor
- Trouble shoot any problems quickly
- Fix broken pages
- Remove code that slows down web crawlers
- Optimize the HTML code for SEO
- Look at other web pages (like your competition), view their HTML code and understand how they are getting a good ranking.

This results in a web page that is more streamlined. Code that we have viewed that was generated by a
website building software package, tends to be filled with unnecessary and redundant html tags and code,
which can and does confuse web crawlers.
Learning HTML will save you thousands of dollars in website fee's and save you thousands of
dollars in advertising by getting ranked in the search engines.
Search engine optimization is not possible if one does not understand how html tags work.
